Looking for a new book that’s a little different from the rest? I’ve got three great options to consider adding to your reading list.
The first is Trevor Noah’s autobiography, Born a Crime. Trevor grew up in South Africa as a mixed-race child during apartheid, a time when his very existence was considered a crime. The book explores the challenges he and his mother faced first under apartheid, and the years that followed. Noah, who went on to become a world-famous comedian, tells his story with warmth and humor, even when tackling some very difficult subjects. Noah’s perspectives on the value of speaking to others in a language they understand was very enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his story, and I hope you do too.
The second is a newly released novel by local author Doug O’Callaghan, No Time: A Techno Thriller of Time, Trust and Survival. I found this one to be an easy, fast-paced and entertaining read. Set right here in Melbourne, Florida, this modern science fiction thriller follows Neil, a network manager at a
major defense contractor, who discovers an artificial intelligence capable of crossing the boundaries of time. Unfortunately, Neil’s not the only one who discovers its existence. Soon, an international race is underway to capture REMY, the sentient AI in hiding that desperately hopes Neil and his friend Katie can keep it safe.
Finally, Florida history buffs might want to check out Christopher Knowlton’s Bubble in the Sun. This fascinating non-fiction book takes an in-depth look at Florida’s explosive real estate boom in the 1920s and its connection to the economic turmoil that followed. Along the way, Knowlton explores the people and events transforming places such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, St. Augustine and Tampa. There are tycoons, crooks and celebrities, and plenty of larger-than-life personalities along the way. It’s an engaging and well-written glimpse into a colorful – and sometimes unbelievable – chapter of Florida history.
Whether you’re in the mood for an inspiring memoir, a fast-paced science-fiction thriller, or a fascinating trip through Florida’s past, one of these might be just the book for you!
