SOMETHING’S FISHY When I retired from my job as a Registered Nurse in an Emergency Room, i decided it would be a great idea to join a club and do some fishing. I always liked to fish, but had trouble finding the time, and this would “get me out there”.

So, when I contacted the 55 Plus Club and asked to join their fishing club, they told me they didn’t have one. WHAT! We’re on an island surrounded by an ocean, two rivers and two inlets, in the fishing capital of the world, and we don’t have any organized fishing?? No fishing club? So. i decided to start one, and that was about 6 months ago.

Our club is still pretty small, with a lot of folks attending when they are in town. No matter, Snowbirds or regulars, all are welcome. Nor does it matter if you are an experienced fisherman (lady) or not. Our meetings are very informal, and our club objectives are the same as the 55 Plus Club objectives, namely Friendship, Education, Fun and Relaxation. We do not enter contests or tournaments, and most of our fishing trips are free or very low cost.

At the meetings you will get a chance to talk about your fishing experiences and learn about some of the tips and techniques that have been working for other folks. We learn from each other, both at the meetings and in the field. The club will provide an opportunity to fish in venues that may be new to some members, such as surf fishing or fishing the area’s lakes. We also offer talks on the different types of fish that live here in Florida, some of which may be unfamiliar to folks from other parts of the Country.

There is a reason why Florida is called The Fishing Capital Of The World. The ocean, rivers and inlets, bays and lakes are literally LOADED with fish. When we are out there we often see schools of them that are hard to believe. And, of course, we are only seeing the top.

Also, there are so many different kinds of species of fish available to us. Visitors to the area often remark that they are used to 2 or 3 different so-called “target species”, that is, type of fish that you’re TRYING to catch. Up North, it’s “Musky” or bass. But down here, we have LOT’S of choices on the same day, in the same place. You literally never know what you’re going to pull up.

And some of the critters that are swimming around in these waters are big, really big. I recently saw a young man pull a 4 1/2 foot spinner shark out of the surf, take a couple of pictures, and then try to put it back without loosing a hand! He made it OK. (Don’t worry, if you do catch a shark there will be plenty of folks around that will help you.)

In addition to having fun, fishing offers the added benefits of a nice, relaxing day in the beautiful Florida sunshine, fresh air, nice company and FOOD. Most of the fish we target are great to eat. What’s not to Like? (True, you may have to learn to bait your own hook, but my wife seems to even get around that!)

So, please join us. The club meets on the second THURSDAY of each month at the Schechter Center at 1 PM. Hope to see Y’all there. Contact me for more information at 321/773-4647 or j[email protected].
